In his 1983 hit “1999”, the legendary Prince memorably sang “2000-0-0 party over, oops – out of time” so tonight he “parties like it’s 1999”. This became a catch phrase in the music lexicon the world over, including in African music.
Major Lazer and DJ Maphorisa have dropped the visuals for their own party-starter ”Particula”. But rather than taking things to ’99, the setting for this get-together goes even further, all the way to the streets of Jo’burg, South Africa in 1979.
The video was shot in South Africa and directed by Adriaan Louw but the Fela inspiration is sprinkled throughout, and pretty hard to miss.

“Particular” features South African rap star Nasty C and Naija’s Jidenna and Ice Prince. Major Lazer have done a lot of collaboration with African acts in the last few months. The new single is off the well-travelled group’s latest EP Know No Better.
