1. Drizzy and Wizzy – there’s more to this, there has to be
Wizkid’s vocals add very little to “One Dance” musically, but the choice to present a singer with only regional equity as a featured guest on an official single is instructive of a bigger plan by Drake and company. Drake is notoriously strategic with his collaborations, songs with Majid Jordan, iLoveMakonnen and Future seemed to come out left field at the time of their release but made business sense much later.

Wizkid is credited as a producer on the record, so that opens up the conversation about whether he has been added to Drake’s writing team, production team or artist roster.

Drake and OVO Sound rarely lend one cosign to unknown artistes if they do not have a business or strategic interest in them, never mind two.

2. We can hear Wizkid!
Nigerians were happy with Wizzy’s growth but were disappointed with a mere 18 second adlibed cameo.

But what exactly did Wizkid say in those 18 seconds?

Got a pretty girl and she love me long time /
Wine it, wine it, very long time /
Oh yeah, very long time /
Back up, back up, back up and wine it /
Back up, back up and wine it, girl /
Back up, back up, back up and wine it /
Oh yeah, very long time /
Back, up, back up and wine it, girl

3. Golden Wizzie
There are two group of Drake singles, the ones for the core rap fans and those for the charts. So for every “Over”, there’s a “Find your Love” and for every “Started from the Bottom”, there’s a “Hold on we’re, coming Home”.  “One Dance” and “Pop Style” follow a similar pattern and while both types of Drizzy singles traditionally do well on the charts and in stores, Drake’s pop records rarely miss an RIAA certification or the Billboard Hot 100 mark. Wizkid has a chance to earn both accolades so early into his career as an international artist.

4. Featuring Wizkid
After appearances on albums from R Kelly and Major Lazer in 2015, “One Dance” is Wizkid’s third high profile international feature in less than 6 months.

Major-Lazer-BOOM

Drake is signed to Universal while Wizkid’s other major label feature was on Sony. This doesn’t give us any clues on where Wizkid will pitch his tent when he does sign an international recording contract. But until he does or at least until he makes it public, expect his name to be associated with several high profile releases in the coming months.

5. OVO vs. OBO, Dreamchasers chasing Star Boys
We are almost ashamed of ourselves for pointing this out, but we find comfort in the thought that some of you thought the exact same thing too.

All is well with two of Nigeria’s biggest pop stars right now but it hasn’t always been. It’s probably coincidental but in “One Dance” and “Fans Mi”, two global superstars who famously don’t get along have features with two continental superstars who choose when they want to get along and when they don’t.
