“Eko” is the endearing name for the madness we call Lagos and Kizz Daniel forsakes his usual lover boy stance to give us this ode to the city of excellence. It’s a sonically soft groove that attempts to give praise to a city known for its hustle and bustle.

The drum takes centre stage with Kizz Daniel attempting to create a hybrid between a local Yoruba sound and his usual Afropop sound. The reactions to this release might be lukewarm and tepid at first but don’t be surprised to see the airwaves warm up to its sensuous feel anytime soon.

If there is anyone whose songs can creep up on you, its Kizz. It may not have the kind of impact previous singles like “One Ticket” and “Madu” have had, it’s still a simplistically delightful cheer of Lagos city.

“Eko” deifies the madness of Lagos with lines like “If you no fit wise for lagos, you no fit wise for anywhere”. Lagos has earned a reputation for being a cutthroat environment and one of those places of which it is said; “if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere”.

Philkeyz provides loud drums but soft chords and Kizz sings about some of the town’s happenings. He sings of the town renowned for opportunities that upon arrival are nowhere to be seen. It’s a brief melodious tune that encourages slight body movement.

It might not be the kind of smash hit that we’ve come to expect from one of Nigeria’s most consistent and talented hitmaker but expect it to do well on airplay.

It’s a song charged with experiences gained from living in this city. The song combines sounds from “Yeba”, while he borrows adlibs from “Madu”. It is not the earth-shattering release of previous songs like one ticket, but it’s a commendable one. A fine tune with a catchy chorus that will ensnare as many that decide to give it a listen.
