Pop artists in Nigeria think the audience mood presently is of dance. And they don’t want to alter this mood by providing an alternative to dance. Singer, Sexy Steel said creating conscious music in the country is a huge risk.
The singer cum fashion designer explained in an interview with HIPTV that artists are often uncertain about the reception conscious music will get post-release.
Steel stated that musicians are often scared to put out socially conscious materials because they did not want to unsettle interests.
“It takes a whole lot of courage to come out with conscious music because you’re scared of getting people pissed,” Sexy Steel said.
“In conscious music you’ve got to be saying the truth; the facts and reality, you know.”
Sexy Steel opined that people do not always want to hear the truth, but they would dance any time.
“These days, they all want to dance to the beat: Shaku Shaku came out; everybody is liking Shaku Shaku; Shaku Shaku everywhere.”
“People that are meant to do the deep songs and conscious songs are cautious of what people will say and just want to roll with the trend.”
