Ric Hassani has categorically defined his genre of music, not as an alternative music, but as pop music.

In the past, because of his seemingly different sound, the singer has been classified as part of the new wave of budding artists who make so-called alternative music. However, Ric Hassani told Ebuka on Rubbin’ Minds that he was not one of them.

“I make pop music, to be honest. A lot of people call it alternative, my music is not alternative, it’s pop music; it’s just soulful pop music.”

The African Perfect Gentleman suggested that his music was wrongly categorised as alternative because it did not sound common.

“I think they call it alternative because most people when they hear a new sound that they don’t know where to place it they just say ‘oh, okay, na all these alternative guys.’ But it’s really pop music, pop-soul.”

Hassani added that the industry was still growing and it was not quite grounded in terms of proper categorisation of music into the right genres yet.

“We are still categorising things, so hopefully we’d get there. For now we’re not really there yet to be categorising, but it comes with growth and definitely we’d get there.”
