Brymo’s “Heya” is arguably one of the most controversial Nigerian songs this year. Brymo put that song out without paid promotion.

“Heya” rode on the back of a controversial video to become one of the most viewed videos by a Nigerian artist this year. The video recorded up to 500k views on YouTube.

It also managed to spur a lot of think-pieces and several articles by some of the most revered music writers in Nigeria.

It did so entirely on earned media.

The artist has now declared the song the song of the year.

Brymo made the declaration late yesterday in a post on Twitter.

“By the way ‘Heya’ is the song/video of the year,” Brymo wrote in the tweet.

“And please don’t tell me that your fave got a million views in a week.”

Since Brymo tweeted that, he has received mild reproach from some of his followers who were willing to challenge his declaration.

Brymo said the fact that he did not run a paid campaign for his Oṣó project did not mean his accomplishments should not be acknowledged.
