You already know Naira Marley was granted bail by a Lagos High Court last week. Even though the bail conditions were considered stiff: he will give the court a sum of ₦2m and two high ranking civil servants as sureties.

Not too bad.

Before news of Naira Marley’s bail came out, he dropped this song he calls “Why”. You’d think the song is about his ordeal in EFCC custody, but it’s not.

“Why” is about fake friends, surprisingly. The song must’ve been recorded prior to the day he was apprehended by the anti-graft body.

This is so because Marley made no clear reference to his time in custody on the song. It’s the same way his associate, Zlatan, who was until two weeks ago in the same custody, dropped a song without referencing what it was like there.

Their music should be reliable documentation of their experience in there. But so far, both Naira Marley and Zlatan are yet to consider it as that.

That is to say, many fans’, “Marlians”, that is, expectations of a “State vs Naira Marley” title is looking highly unlikely to happen. Although, there’s more music to come from the singer.

Who snitched on Naira Marley?

The possibility of this is very high. It’s possible that audience and observers are carried away by the spontaneity of the whole incident.

“Why do I have to swear on my life if you’re really my friend?” Naira Marley asks in the chorus of “Why”. “Why you talking shit about your friend to your girl?” He continues before proceeding to break up his friendship in the verse that follows.

What this hints at is betrayal somewhere. There’s a chance the AfroBashment star’s recent travail were the result of a friend selling him out.

While there’s not enough data to back this claim, the lyrics of the song provides compelling insight. Moving further, there’s also an uncanny correlation between what Zlatan Ibile rapped about after his release and what Naira Marley chose to address in his own song, too.

Who’s the friend that sold Naira Marley out? At any rate, the result of this is the singer’s most introspective song yet and this is good.
