Lil Kesh is an exciting artist for many reasons. Yet it is the way he tells his story that sets him apart from others. When he tells a story, it’s often so granular and point blank.

The Nigerian audience are used to this from the artist’s YBNL days to his now almost indie moments. Lil Kesh still retains the ability except that now, it’s rather well-refined, a sound indication of his growth as an artist.

Lil Kesh carries this energy unsurprisingly to his new song “Nkan Be”. The song features DMW’s Mayorkun, who balances out Lil Kesh’s bars with his sultry vocals.

“Nkan Be” draws influence from a popular radio and television show from as far back as the late 90s. The show narrated mysterious stories which are outside the purview of almost 90% of its audience.

“Nkan Be”, meaning “strange things are happening” in its pure context, is Lil Kesh’s acknowledgement of limited grasp of life and its dynamics. The artist knows that biases are mostly formed from one’s perspective to things but he’s flexible enough to want to accommodate fresher experiences.

However, for Lil Kesh, this ditty is limited by its focus on love and not other complex aspects of life. This direction isn’t strange because the artist isn’t known for introspective takes on intense and sensitive subjects. Really, Lil Kesh just wants to enjoy his life and on “Nkan Be” he’s in thrall to a special lady he met after thinking he’s seen them all.

Mayorkun, who perhaps still has the keys to the heart of Nigerian women offers support to Kesh on the song. For the two artists, “Nkan Be” is a chance to exaggerate the importance of their love interest, at least to get a chance at eating.
