Burna’s back.

One of Nigeria’s most polarizing musicians returned to the UK last week after an almost 7 year absence. In his younger years, Burna Boy was allegedly involved in gang activity that resulted in loss of life and prevented him from reentering the country. Add that to a very public back and forth with a woman claiming that the singer is the father of her unborn child and a lesser man would be drowned in regret, but not Oluwa Burna.

Last night, I had a dream, somebody gave me a time machine /
Flew threw the times back and forth /
Still ain’t changed nothing at all /
Not even all my bad luck /
Not even the times I broke the law /

But one thing that has changed evidently is the production. No disrespect to Orbeats and the other producers that worked on the ill-fated On a Spaceship project but the chemistry between LeriQ and Burna Boy cannot be duplicated. LeriQ is peerless in the mid-tempo club banger category, where Burna’s chill but uneven vocals thrive best.

The song starts off with a lengthy piano solo punctuated by expertly-measured kick drums that provide the perfect foreword to Burna’s foul-mouthed soul search. Interestingly, his melancholy doesn’t dampen the vibe at all, “Pree me” blossoms into the type of track DJ’s normally love to queue up just as a crowd is about to lose its energy.

According to multiple sources within Burna’s camp, not only has the dance hall star reunited with LeriQ, he’s also being managed by Aristokrat Records once again. If those reports are true, then Burna has the perfect platform to thrive once again.

The song was premiered on Julie Adenuga’s Beat 1 radio show and what we have is a rip, so forgive the grainy quality. Burna has a new 7 track EP titled Redemption that will be dropping on the 8th of July, which means it will be dropping today.
