It never actually crossed my mind before now but the more I read Charly Boy’s tribute to Prince, the more it made sense to me – Charly Boy must have been deeply inspired by that sexy m’fer.

Charly Boy is nowhere near as prolific as Prince was but eccentricity? Charly Boy can hold his own, at least better than anyone in Africa can. Just like Prince, Charly Boy is very vocal about artiste rights in his home country and has headed the Performing Musicians Employers’ Association Of Nigeria (PMAN) before. Then there’s the sexual ambiguity that continues to follow Charly Boy, even though he’s been married to Lady D for more than 30 years and they have children and grandchildren together.

Charly Boy loves the attention, his effusive tribute has gotten a lot of that recently. But Charly’s tribute to Prince was not as surprising for me as it was confusing, here are the 5 things I didn’t quite unsten.

1. My first encounter with this special spirit was in 1982… The first and only time in my life that I was transfixed, perplexed, hypnotized and melting at the sight of a fellow human being.

We know the feeling, we feel the same way about you, for other reasons.

2. I may have walked away that night with only a handshake, but it was a handshake that changed my life for the better.

Oga o, what more did he want?

3. The more I researched him the more I fell in love with him, you can take that literally. If I ever had any gay tendencies, he would have been the one I would have given my body to.

We want Diane’s number.

4. How? Why did it have to happen to you at such a young age when you were only getting started.

Apparently Prince was just 17 when he died, life must really start at 40.

5. Rest in peace beautiful soul, you were too  clean to die.

Charly Boy just gave “heavenly showers” a whole new meaning.

RIP Prince.
