The General Manager of Sony Music West Africa, Michael Ugwu recently spoke to CNN and shared his company’s vision for the Nigerian music industry.
Explaining the motive behind Sony Music setting up shop in Lagos, Nigeria, Michael said –
It was like validation that the hard work wasn’t in vain. That we are doing something that the big corporations were now looking on and saying – look, okay what’s actually happening?
He went on to speak about the company’s vision for Davido after signing him to a global record contract –
Davido now signing to Sony, especially in a global deal actually gives him an opportunity to penetrate other markets.
The Sony executive has been in the news lately, speaking at the “Nigeria’s Music Industry – Ready & Open 4 Business” panel at SXSW, 2016. He shed more light on how the relationship between Davido and Sony could be mutually beneficial.

Davido was signed to a global music contract with Sony Music Entertainment in January, 2016. His signing is part of Sony’s strategic direction to expand operations into the Middle East and Africa.
