Nigerian music videos have been synonymous with monotony recently. This monotony has bred indifference in the minds of keen music audience; a quarter pays attention to the videos, but not with full mind, some others do not just bother at all. The blame has fallen on artists: The artistes are saying no, it’s not them, it’s the directors. Now, it’s the directors turn to shift the blame.
Acclaimed music video director, Unlimited LA, has blamed the creativity glut on the artists.
The director explained to HIPTV recently that music video directors give whatever the artists feed them.
LA said the work of the artists impact their own work heavily.
“You can hardly listen to a song without actually listening to words like ‘Baby o’; ‘For my head o’. Once you listen to these songs, there’s no way you can open a channel of creativity on anybody that listens to the same thing over and over again.”
He said there is no diversity and creativity in the content musicians bring to them.
Unlimited LA, who shot Olamide’s video for the controversial song “Science Student”, stated that musicians in the country are fond of recycling sounds and this could hamper the creative output of any music video director.
“How do you want a creative mind to be creative [while working] on the same thing? At least the first [set of] people that did that type of song I’m sure they have a unique video.”
LA also hinted that artists with financial clout are more likely to get creative music videos.
