Upcoming R&B singer Tjan released his newest song “Aduke” 3 weeks ago , it was number 2 last week and now it’s top of the PlayData charts, this music business thing must be so easy.

“Aduke” is a brilliant record, no doubt, but it’s almost unheard of for a song as slow as this to catch on as quick as that from an artist as new as he is. And all this without a music video. The song has been heavily promoted both online and offline, there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s just that if some of that promotion was done under the table at radio stations, it defeats one of the aims of counting radio spins in the first place.

Another song that occupies a suspicious position is TeeBlaq’s “Gbemileke” which dropped down four places to #8 on the charts. It will be interesting to see how the Afrobeat-inspired tune performs in the coming weeks when promotion slows down naturally but let’s move on from this discussion on inorganic radio spins.

One thing to look forward to in the coming weeks is Cynthia Morgan’s new album. The dance hall star doesn’t have a single on the charts right now, so she might struggle to gather momentum for the project in just 2 months. A possible way out could be continuing to produce magic moments – like when she allowed an interviewer feel her breasts one time to see if they’re real but the interviewer wanted a second helping.

This is the same presenter that made Omawumi uncomfortable last month.

Back to the charts, the original and remix versions of “Wait”Solid Star’s anthem on abstinence both found places in the top 20, at #17 and  #6 respectively. That’s good to see because songs that preach a strong moral message aren’t always favoured by the radio. If they were, maybe Cynthia Morgan’s “Baby Mama” would be somewhere on the charts. Speaking of positive messages, there’s none more positive than Lynxxx at the moment, his “Serve You” joint is up to a respectable start at #58. It’s his first single detailing his transition to a born-again Christian, you can read our eulogy for Jollof music and our investigation to find artists that followed a similar path to Lynxxx in the past.
