French president, Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday became the first president to step into the renowned Afrika Shrine in Lagos.
The president was on a mini-tour to Africa and stopped by in Lagos after meeting with Nigeria president, Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja.
Hosted by Femi Kuti at the shrine, President Macron described musical performances at the Afrika Shrine as “the African energy”.
The French president who had also been in Lagos when he was 23-year old said he was delighted to find that the iconic shrine was still thriving.
“This is African energy. The one I discovered here in Lagos when I was 23. The one I am glad to see is still thriving several years later,” Macron wrote in a tweet.
“The one I hope many Europeans will get to know. The one that is far from the African prejudice of misery.”
Macron said he had been waiting for a “good occasion” to come back to the shrine after so many years.
“I know the place and I have some memories about the place. I have to confess at the time there was no president around, so I hope I don’t spoil the party.”
The Shrine is an iconic cultural hub. And I say with a lot of humility that I recognize the importance of African culture. pic.twitter.com/u77v7tiEKx
