Nigerian music fans are not done seeking closure regarding why their favourite rappers switched to singing. While some of these artistes are raising their palms, some others are willing to justify their decisions. One of these guys is Phyno who says it’s all an effort to be versatile.
Phyno told HipTV that the fans were right to express their fears over the decision of an artiste to quit what s/he was originally known for.
He said his transformation from rapping to singing was because of his growth as an artist.
“To me, I think I grew from what I used to be, not because the fans are wrong—the fans are not wrong at all.”
The “Fada Fada” singer said much of the changes he made to his craft were due to the dynamic nature of music fans in the country.
“The fans changed as well. They go to the club where they don’t play rap songs and then dance: They make the pop artists the bigger artistes.”
Phyno hinted that if he had kept on rapping he might never have recorded much acclaim as he had now.
“You’d rap. But you’ll stay the same. You need to be where the other artists are. At the end of the day, if you think you can do both, you’re actually more versatile. And that’s what the industry is about.”
