Most Nigerian music audience believe Omawumi is off-the-radar. The singer does not agree and the facts do prove her right. In 2017, she not only dropped a timeless album, she also went viral for her performance at the World Food Prize. If that is the definition of low-key, Omawumi says she is happy like that.
The singer explained to HIPTV recently that her last album, Timeless, was not for mainstream consumption. She said the album was strategically marketed to international audience.
She stated that she would not balk at the chance of working on an album similar to Timeless. “There are no rules,” she said.
Omawonder continued that she also got international publishing and distribution deals for the album.
“I released an album last year. And it was a 100% live album that had a really strong marketing push abroad; with international distribution and publishing.”
The “Bottom Belle” singer noted that there is a little chance that the album would be recognised by award organisers in Nigeria.
“Will I be very surprised? No. Not wanting to sound egotistical or immodest, I would be happy if I win a Headies.”
“It [the album: Timeless] wasn’t really mainstream. So I would be pleasantly surprised if it did what it’s supposed to do.”
