Forbes Africa has released its list of the 10 richest African artists. According to the magazine, the artists who made the cut were selected based on different criteria including endorsement value, popularity, show rates, sales, awards, YouTube views, appearance in newspapers, investment, social media presence, influence, and so on.

A few of Naija stars made the list, check it out below:

AKON

Akon is an obvious part of this list, what with over 35 million albums sold worldwide. The Senegalese singer has won five Grammy Award nominations and has 45 Billboard Hot 100 songs.

BLACK COFFEE

South African artist and DJ Black Coffee whose real name is Nkosinathi Maphumulo, is a multi-award winning singer. He hails from house music province, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). He has numerous albums to his name.

 HUGH MASEKELA,

Born in Witbank, east of Johannesburg, Hugh Masekela has released over 43 albums and performed with the likes of Marvin Gaye, Dizzy Gillespie, The Byrds, Fela Kuti, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder and Miriam Makeba.

DON JAZZY

Naija’s Don Jazzy came in fourth on the list of the richest musicians in Africa and the first in Nigeria. Born Michael Collins Ajereh, he is an artist, producer and owner of one of the biggest record labels in Nigeria, Mavin Records.

TINASHE

Tinashe who began singing almost at the same time she could speak made her debut in 2000 in the film ‘Cora Unashamed’. It may come as a shock to many that she’s African but the star hails from Zimbabwe.

She also did a voice over in the cartoon feature film “The Polar Express” alongside Oscar-winning actor, Tom Hanks.

 JIDENNA

Jidenna Theodore Mobisson popularly known as ”Jidenna” who was on his way to becoming an Engineer always had a passion for music which shines through in his love for the art and the music itself. He is ranked as the sixth on the list.

WIZKID

Coming in at seventh place on the list, does nothing to detract from the fact that Wizkid is unarguably the uncrowned king of African music. Baba nla himself has managed to open up the Nigerian sound to the rest of the world.

He has also collaborated with a lot of foreign artistes including Drake, Vybz Kartel, Wale and others.

DAVIDO

Davido has come a long way in the last five years and has definitely earned his spot on the list. He became famous for his widely acclaimed 2012 debut album “Omo Baba Olowo.” His international collaborations include Rae Sremmurd, Tinashe and others.

SARKODIE

Michael Owusu Addo popularly known as Sarkodie, started out as an underground rapper. The Azonto advocate has stayed through to the Ghanaian genre which is said to have been born out of Kpanlogo, a traditional dance. His first single off his fourth album, Mewu, sold almost 4,000 copies on the first day of its release in Ghana.

Sarkodie is also the first Ghanaian to win a BET award.

OLIVER MTUKUDZI

Oliver Tuku Mtukudzi a Zimbabwean has had a very impressive career. He has over 65 albums to his name.

His career spans 41 years with songs that have been played all over the world. He his ranked 10th richest musician in Africa.
