Erigga was first renowned for his strong-worded lyrics and gritty storytelling. The Warri rapper now says, however, that he’s had to tone down his lyrics because he is trying to go global. The new direction was evident in the release of his last two albums: Okorowanta and A Trip To The South.

The rapper told HIPTV in a recent interview that it was difficult for people to start to see the change in his music, which they had already regarded to be “vulgar”.

Paperboy said people have already made up their minds on how they perceive his songs because of what they had heard in his earlier works.

“I just feel it’s a stereotypical feeling whenever you listen to Erigga because of what you heard. You be ‘Oh, Erigga, that guy that does this vulgar thing’. People are already stereotypical right now. When they just hear the name Erigga they just feel that song has vulgar contents.”

New Money maintained that he had gone past that period a long time ago.

“But I stopped doing that: That was like how many years ago? So right now you can’t tag Erigga like that because if you listen to the albums you know that we’ve really narrowed it down.”
