Renowned singer Ade Bantu has opined that the focus of Nigerian artists on making breakout singles could be detrimental to their musical evolution.

The singer told HIPTV recently that musicians in the country no longer make albums as they used to and it was somehow hurting their craft.

He said the focus of artists on making hit singles had contributed to the emergence of a “singles culture”.

He maintained that most artists now believe all they needed to reach a high-point in their career was just a hit single.

“A lot of these pop artists believe all I have to do is drop that one big hit single and then I have made it!’ So what they’re permanently doing is trying to get that hit single.”

He added that artists now spend most of their time working on how to make the hit single that would sell them to their audience.

Bantu remarked that their subsequent songs often turn out to be a formulaic attempt at recreating their hit song in another way.
