Remember Starboy Terri? Well, he has a new single titled “Nonstop” with a video to match and he manages to fulfill all the clichés about Nigerian music while doing nothing remotely spectacular enough to hold one’s interest.
Party bop? Check. Jiggling booties? Check. Recycled lyrics? Check. ‘Erima’, ‘ginger me’, ‘whine for me’, ‘I go spray money’, you get the drift. This is that song you’ve heard countless times from different Nigerian artistes.
The only thing that manages to momentarily spike my interest in this tune is the “Shabadi” that lets you know that Killertunes is handling the production but even that does nothing to assuage my feelings about the single so I’ll just lay it bare.
It would have been slightly less worrying if the song held enough water to be a hit but even with all its clichés, this is a bottom barrel track at best.
I doubt even the almighty Wizkid can get this song the airplay it needs to be anything as I reckon Nigerian DJs would have heard a tune similar to this a million times. An afropop tune that doesn’t leave much to be said especially when you hear lines like “make you just dey go make weigh like kilo, na you dey choco my milo”.
Although, the production, of course, is class as Killertunes provides a decent enough canvass that has one wondering if another artiste could have produced a masterpiece if the brush were given to him/her but for now, lets put our what ifs aside and acknowledge this sallow tune that we have here.
