Nigerian artists don’t see out their contracts. It’s likely because of the messed up music industry structures or the depravity of the artists. The list of artists ditching their contracts keeps growing.
The new addition to that list is rapper, Oladips. The artist first signed with Reminisce’s LRR/Edge records in 2016. However, his growth hasn’t been remarkable.
This is why Oladips departed the label after spending about four years there. He announced his exit this weekend during a radio interview in Lagos.
Even though he didn’t say in clear terms why he left, the signs were too loud to ignore.
“Honestly, I wouldn’t have signed a record deal,” Oladips said in the interview.
He then went further to vehemently deny that he regretted his time at his now former label, LRR.
“I don’t regret signing though, because bad as e bad I’m still here. I actually progressed, it’s not as if —” the artist explained further, “I actually progressed from where I was to the next level, I’m just saying [that’s the one thing I regret].”
Judging Oladips?
Oladips’ comments in the interview have led to several reactions across social media platforms. Predictably, most of the conversation was about the nature of his departure. Social media commentators are saying he actually did progress as an artist under LRR.
But Oladips has taken matters into his own hands to chronicle his ordeal. He did so by releasing a song he called “Maybe”.
On “Maybe”, Oladips appeared to have found his voice; he was determined to express himself and he did just that.
“I was a young, promising kid when I joined the label. Same reason why I had to leave the label. I used to be responsible for all my wins, but now I feel like somebody cut my wings,” the artist rapped on “Maybe”.
Oladips made some indicting comments on the song and it’s better you unearth those claims yourself.
