Harmonize: There is an increasing continental push among by African artists and this is a very good thing. Artists in countries like Congo, Benin Republic, Togo and other places once got people dancing to local music at a continental stage. Despite being a good thing, African artists seem to have taken the backseat in their push for continental popularity. The new wave of artists are now making efforts to conquer the continent, but at for different reasons.
Artists are no longer trying to take a direct leap from their own countries directly into the global market. The strategy is now local to continental. One of the many artists trying this model, which is not so new, is Tanzania’s Harmonize.
Last year, Tanzanian veteran musician, TID called out Harmonize. He asked the singer, “Are you trying to be Nigerian?”. Apparently, there are strong Nigerian influences on Harmonize’s music. The singer won’t let such comments about him copying Nigerian music hold him back. Instead, he owns it and makes efforts to actualise his end goal — of being dominant beyond his own country.
In the wake of this, Harmonize has collaborated with Nigerian star, Burna Boy. He is presently in Lagos, touring FM stations. And today, he drops his new single, “Tepete” featuring Mr Eazi. “Tepete” is off Harmonize’s newly released EP, Afrobongo.
You will find strong Nigerian influences in “Tepete” as you listen. It is groovy and danceable. Even at some point, it begins to sound like Sarz and Flash’s “Carry Go”, but the sound is still clean.
“Tepete” is produced by Nigerian beatmaker, Chopstix.
Harmonize is well on his way to being a force in African music. And at 27, he has enough time to conquer the continent.
