Jidenna’s long-awaited debut album The Chief has seen several setbacks since when it was first announced in December, 2015 but it’s out now. Containing 14 tracks in total, the album features guest appearances from Roman, Janelle Monae, Nana Kwabena, St. Beauty, and more.

The Chief is coming out nearly two years after Jidenna broke into the music scene with the smash hit “Classic Man”. There’s a sense that the rapper missed the moment by not releasing the project sooner, here’s what Jidenna told the Breakfast Club about the timing of his album in a recent interview:

No, not at all, I’m right on time. [The album] was supposed to come out earlier and we had a couple of release dates last year and in the process of promoting it, I made a second album. We decided to merge the two to make a better album that we are releasing in February – The Chief.

I was done with the album, I wrote all these songs a year ago… In promoting it, I felt like it would be better to make a more holistic album, so I went back in while we were in Nigeria, or actually South Africa and made a better album.
