DJ Khaled’s protégé Kent Jones released “Don’t Mind” in the summer of 2015 as part of his Tours mixtape. “Don’t Mind” has been a humongous hit, it’s been watched over 100 million times on YouTube so you know there are bound to be 100 million covers too.

The latest is by Arewa rapper Kheengz , aka King Bawa. He positions his version as a DM back-and-forth between him and a girl where he fumbles when trying to get the right words to say. The minute he gets in and gets a semblance of composure, the wordsmith wastes no time in telling her she owns his heart – that was quick.

He tries to feel her out a bit and finally gets around to asking for her name, the girl is called Halima, so the song is dedicated to all Halimas out there.

Sunan ca Halima, but I can call her Hafsat

Always covered up but you can seen her backside

That line about being covered up but never truly being covered up is naughty and genius at the same time. There’s a notion that gentlemen from the north do not appreciate it when their ladies’ curves are visible to the rest of the world but Halima can’t help herself if she was blessed in certain ways.

Halima is the daughter of a commissioner in Kano, or so the story goes, so Kheengz presses her, trying to find out when next she’ll be in town. It looks promising for the two of them.

The chorus is in Hausa and why not? After all in the original version, Kent tried to show that he could say hello in Japanese and French, among other languages. Why can’t Hausa be another language that the world learns to say hello in?

Say hello to Young Kheengz, he is stepping things up this year, expect more music from the Arewa MC.
