Soul music has become underground, grown folk music these days, but it still has its modern day disciples. One of them is Michael Samuel Kiwanuka, a British soul musician with Ugandan roots. His style of music has been compared to a number of greats such as Bill Withers, Randy Newman, Terry Callier, and Otis Redding and his star is on the rise.
In 2012, Michael won the BBC’s “Sound of” 2012 poll, an annual BBC poll of music critics and industry figures to find the most promising new music talent. He came in ahead of Frank Ocean, Skrillex and Azealia Banks.
His musical journey has taken him from being a session guitarist for Labrinth, to pursuing an active solo singing career and signing to Communion Records, UK, a label set up by Mumford and Sons’ Ben Lovett.
Michael has an album coming out on July 15, 2016 called Love & Hate. His music is effortlessly soulful but with a conscious message, you should get familiar.
