Orezi in a recent interview with HipTV claimed that most record label owners in Nigeria don’t know the music business.
A lot of them have funds and just do it as a past time.
One is inclined to agree with him. Most labels owned by artistes, promoters and others grounded in the industry tend to do better than others.
Classic example is the fracas between Eric Manny and Runtown. The messy business dragged on for a while with the label asking for a court injunction to prevent him from performing at shows. Although the matter was eventually resolved amicably, we won’t forget how events played out in a hurry.
This can be compared to how the Olamide owned YBNL Nation handled Lil Kesh‘s exit. The two still collaborate on music in a mutual show of respect.
According to Orezi:
”A lot of those who don’t do well don’t understand the responsibilities of owning a record label. You just find a couple of people who have money and just want to do business without having an idea of what the music business is about.
A lot of them in Nigeria don’t know the business and don’t understand it, they just have funds….”
