Member of the defunct rap group “Da Thoroughbred”, Illbliss, has pointed out that the hip-hop genre in Nigeria was not profitable for a long while.
The rapper, who also runs a The Goretti Music Company, told HIPTV recently that hip-hop in Nigeria is not in a good shape.
Illbliss noted that the genre only started getting attention from corporate bodies recently.
“Hip-hop has been broke for a long time, up until the last couple of years when a couple of things started happening for us endorsement wise.”
The rapper maintained that most of the rap artists in the country were willing to record pure rap projects but the projects do not appeal to the mass audience.
“I want more rappers, I want more bars, I want more lyricism, more lyrical content. But are the people going to buy it?”
Illbliss stated that rappers are not to be blamed for abandoning the genre.
“When you look at the so-called rappers that are singing, can you really blame them? The music industry is a reflection of the Nigerian economy, so people are trying to eat.”
