There have been many instances when popular artists in Nigeria tweaked their sound for “commercial appeal”, but veteran R&B/soul singer Darey has said he has never considered doing that.

“My sound is my sound,” The “Pray For Me” singer told HIPTV in an interview.

The singer stated that as long as he makes money from the genre he is recognised for he is fine.

Darey described what people call “commercial music” as profitable music.

“‘Commercial’ is when you’re making money from it: ‘commercial’ in terms of what?”

The singer further clarified the disparity between popular music, which is erroneously termed to commercial music and alternative music.

“Pop music can never be alternative music; alternative music could be pop music. Sometimes pop music could be alternative music. It really depends on what the masses feel like listening to at that point in time.”

“If next year comes and it’s just guitar and singing that’s reigning [musicians] would start doing it.”

Darey said he would continue to make music as it comes to him naturally and not as trend dictates.
