The Copyright Organisation of Nigerian (COSON) has a lot of battles it is fighting right now. These battles will not end anytime soon. First, it was with the Musical Copyright Society of Nigeria (MCSN), now it is with its own leaders. The unsteady politics in COSON this time may lead to its eventual demise. Efe Omoregbe, who was declared chairman of the organisation in December 2017, has been granted bail following his arrest on allegation of forgery last week.
“Yes, I was arrested, but I have been granted bail and we will address the issues shortly after due consultations with my team.” Omoregbe said, according to a Pulse report.
Omoregbe was arrested alongside Joel Ajayi on two count charge of forgery and impersonation. The two were arraigned at the Igbosere High Court in Lagos on a four count charge of: forgery, falsification of document with the intent to defraud and breach of peace alongside some others who Police said are at large.
The court granted Omoregbe and Ajayi bail while also adjourning the case to May 17th 2018.
The arrest of the two was carried out following a petition signed by the reinstated chairman of COSON, Tony Okoroji.
Tony Okoroji, the organisation’s chairman was asked to step down in December last year. He was accused of high-handedness and abuse of office. However, he has since remained chairman of the body in spite the resolution made by the directors of the body, Dare Fasasi and Obi Asika. COSON general assembly, led by Sir Victor Uwaifo would later nullify the decision of the two, a move that led to Okoroji retaining his position his position as chairman of the body. A sort of parallel leadership now exist in COSON with Efe Omoregbe refusing to give up his own position.
