A lot of artist in Nigeria are now disillusioned with the traditional structure of record labels operating in the country. This is as a result of the many fallouts artists have had with the labels due to contracts and other side issues. CDQ believes record labels stifle the craft of artists signed to them.
The rapper/singer explained to PlanetRadioTV recently that he does not intend to sign any artist to his own label. CDQ said he would rather offer the artist support than sign them officially to his label, “No Struggle, No Success” (NSNS).
“I did a song titled “Kosere”, then I did a contest on Instagram which I picked about four different rappers from the grassroot and I decided to feature them, give them a platform. So right now they’re going to shows, different places: They’re making their money.”
“I believe in me just giving support to artists.”
CDQ stated that his own record label does not have the capacity to sign artists at the moment. The rapper said his refusal to sign any artist to NSNS was in his own interest.
“I can’t actually said that my label has the power to sign any artist yet. I can’t just bring in an artist and cage them because I have my own career to chase. But I can always give support to them.”
He also described being signed to the average Nigerian record label as a form of “slavery”. CDQ hinted that the talents of many label-signed artists are caged.
He said: “Talent is something that you can’t cage. Talent needs freedom.”
