In 2012 Brymo’s hit single, Ara, dropped and got everyone dancing, however, Brymo has claimed that he has never done a “dance song” since he started his music career.
Brymo told Loose Talk hosts, Steve Dede and Ayomide Tayo, recently that his effort on Ara was pop music.
He said the song was erroneously categorised as “dance song” because of its grooviness.
Olawale noted that Ara is in the category of acclaimed pop songs like US legend, Lionel Ritchie’s All Night Long.
“If you’re going to be sincere with yourself even Ara is not a dance song. Ara is more like Lionel Ritchie’s All Night Long than being a real party song. So Ara is pop.”
Brymo explained that most of his discography fall in the pop music category.
The renowned singer maintained that he has never stayed away from pop music, contrary to popular belief and classification of his music.
Brymo added that there has been a complete disregard for genre classifications in Nigeria.
“I feel like we’ve forgotten the definition of genres here. Because everybody has been cultured to say ‘If I cannot dance to the music… if the DJ does not play this music in the club then I don’t want to listen to it.’”
Brymo said there is the need to structure the music business so that there can be proper data as to the type of sounds audience prefer.
Brymo’s sixth album, Oso, is due out 27th March.
