Listen here, I don’t care what anybody from the Middle East has to say, shawarma is a Nigerian meal.
The way we’ve embraced the thing, you’d think that it was made here first. But we’ve basically appropriated Middle Eastern culture and the “Nigerian shawarma” usually has a lot less green and a lot more meat than what the spot being run by a Lebanese guy would serve you.
If you’re ever out and about at night in most Nigerian cities, shawarmas are usually the easiest things to find and the quickest to gobble up and keep the groove alive. So in that way, making the staple food for the nightlife the central theme of their spanking new single is a masterstroke by Masterkraft and DJ Exclusive. It doesn’t get anymore relatable than this for party-goers.
Masterkraft, who is arguably the most versatile music producer out now, delivers a house beat that leans heavily towards the spacey South African sound but injects drums and a cadence that makes it still sound very Nigerian. The video was shot in Lagos by Clarence Peters and it follows a group of girls as they do what some of us love to do on a Friday night – go out, turn up and refuse to turn down, even if sometimes, the pangs of midnight hunger want us to do so.
