Women are breaking the glass ceilings with reckless abandon these days. Just last night, Hillary Rodham Clinton, former First Lady, Senator, and Secretary of State, made history by becoming the Presidential nominee of a major political party in the United States and showing that indeed a woman can become the President of the most powerful country in the world.
Up here in Nigeria, our ladies are also making sure that the shatter of glass ceilings is heard. Let me digress a little.
You see, I find it difficult to begrudge graduates of Covenant University. It seems as if that school puts extra into them, beyond the academics. They seem to produce exceptional people year in year out.
This might be why Simisola Bolatito Ogunleye, known to us mere mortals simply as Simi, a Mass Communication graduate from this Covenant we are talking about, is a bundle of awesomeness.
When Adekunle Gold released the cover of his now wave making debut album, Gold, something in the credits caught our eyes.
Fifteen of the sixteen tracks were mixed and mastered by one person – Simi.
Mixing and mastering is done by a Sound Engineer. Sound engineering before now is seen as an exclusive preserve of men. Not anymore!
In a recent interview with The Punch, she was asked what other talents she has. She responded thus:
I am also a sound engineer, so I mix and master music. This a major boost to my career because it means that there are a lot of things I can do on my own. It has also proven to a lot of critics that I am not just another artiste.
According to musiceducationmadness.com:
Sound engineering is a highly technical job. Becoming an audio engineer requires excellent computer skills and proficiency in working with electronic equipment. Audio engineers must coordinate with video technicians, editors, performers and directors to create professional-quality audio.
Simi is now one in a long line of Nigerian sound engineers, notable among whom are Suka Sounds, Zeeno Foster, and Indomix. But she has one up on these gentlemen, she is a recording artist too.
What a lady!
