By producing love songs for a living, R&B singers put a lot of pressure on themselves to be the imaginary lover to a 1,000 women, even though they might eventually become the Romeo to just one Juliet.
Their music speaks to women’s imaginations and makes them run wild! It’s the promise of fireworks when they’re together, the candlelight dinners, the nights of passionate love-making and a momentary escape from their relationship with ‘regular’ men – the modern, male R&B singer is a package deal that is almost always on sale, but his female fans can’t ever truly buy.
For over a decade Banky W has wrapped up stories about love and presented them beautifully in 5 solo projects, namely: The Undeniable EP (2003), Back In the Buildin’ (2005), Mr. Capable (2008), The W Experience (2009) and R&BW (2013). In that time, the singer has ascended to the top of Nigerian music and is arguably the most successful traditional R&B singer of the modern era.
As expected, like most male R&B superstars, Banky’s music raises the bar of expectation for his personal life. Little wonder then that in every single interview in the last few years, the singer is routinely harassed with questions about his personal life – Who were all these love songs written for? Who is Banky W dating? Why hasn’t he settled down? But the singer put an end to that line of questioning today in grand style. In a two-part Instagram post, Banky announced his engagement to actress Adesua Etomi and his uber-romantic message was nothing short of R&B: right on brand.

Banky’s announcement has been trending all day on social media and rightly so, you want your R&B singers to do R&B things and it doesn’t get more R&B than this.
The announcement puts an end to months of speculation that the extremely good-looking pair were an item. The couple fueled speculation when Adesua was picked as Banky’s love interest in the “Made for You” video and caused even more speculation when they were cast as couples in the hit movie Wedding Party.
The couple, and the rest of the cast of the movie, is reportedly hard at work on the sequel to Wedding Party and Banky W, the man who made a career promoting love stories, insists that this time, his own love is not for promo.
