Davido has already signed out of a very impressive 2017 with his 30 Billion Concert which ran into the early hours of today. The concert sold out even before the event commenced and this was no marketing gimmick, people really wanted to see what he had to offer for the much publicised concert. But whether the concert was worth the admission is still up for debate. That said, there’s no denying that Davido gave us some great talking points, here’s 5 of them:
5.) Live Streaming Isn’t Always
It is a good thing that music lovers who could not make it to the concert had the chance to view the event live, as e dey hot, but affording the audience the chance of streaming the event live could do your event more harm than good. Bad internet links and delays could make events seem poorly produced when watching from afar. This could then snowball into negative comments that could grow into an avalanche, and eventually dictate the narrative of the show. Meanwhile, those that are presence and in the moment have a different experience.
4.) Dr. Sid’s Hairdo Tore People’s Stomachs Apart
Dr. Sid may not have been happy that D’Banj overshadowed him when they were all in Mo’Hits, but last night the former vet doctor was on the same stage with his former boss and he stole the headlines for once. Sid’s hair was the center of attention, not his performance. The sides of the singer’s head were shaved clean with a braided bundle in the middle of it. On first sight, he could easily pass off as Solidstar’s darker brother or to a poor man’s Ty Dolla $ign. Predictably, Sid has become the subject of taunts and memes online. By the time he wakes up and sees all these things that have been said of his hair, he probably would say something like: “Last last, una go dey all right.” Or “I made millions last night!”, but Sid definitely would have preferred if people were talking about something other than his hair.
3.) Davido Allowing Unknown Artists To Crowd The Stage And Do Their Own Thing
Before Davido came on stage there was a flurry of performances by young artists like: Idowest, Real Self, Zlatan Ibile, Dremo and others. This singular gesture to give these guys a chance would later irk fans who were desperately eager for the headline stars to come on stage. It took a while for the heavy-hitters to appear, with comedy interludes added to prolong the waiting time. However, as soon as the main guys started to perform, concert-goers caught the groove.
2.) Davido Performed “Manya” Alongside Wizkid
What Pepsi has joined together; the newfound love between the Africa’s Messi and Ronaldo was revisited again at Davido’s 30 Billion Concert, the 2 artists, again, performed “Manya” Wizkid’s latest hit together. But apparently, the only thing Wizkid loves more than his new brother in rhyme is his Gucci sweaters, the singer got on stage, again looking like a million bucks, literally. All these two needs to do now is to consummate their relationship with a hit single. See, it is all for the good.
1.) Mo’Hits Reunited To Perform For The First Time In 5 Years, And On The Tenth Anniversary Of The “Curriculum Vitae” Album
If there were a thing to credit #30BillionConcert for it would be its effort to bring Nigeria’s favourite, now estranged music group, Mo’hits together again. Koko Master, D’Banj, Wande Coal, Don Jazzy, Dr. Sid, D’Prince and Ikechukwu, emerged on the stage to wild screams of surprise by concert-goers in the early hours of today. Don Jazzy with the staff; D’Banj with his playboy vibe, Wande Coal with his sultry voice, this was Mo’hits as we knew them. Even the annoying presence of hype man Special Spesh could not taint the special moment. When Davido told followers that he had a surprise for them he indeed knew what he was saying. The effort to bring Mo’Hits for this concert took two months, Davido revealed.
At the end of the day, everyone left the venue not only having sung current hits:
“Shukura kilo ko si?/ shuku shaker, aya shoemaker/
But also taking a trip down memory lane, having watched a crew we’d vibed to for the greater part of the last decade.
