On Thursday, June 30th, 2016, MI Abaga will be celebrating his first anniversary as the CEO of one of Africa’s foremost entertainment companies Chocolate City Music.

To mark the day, MI will be releasing a Masterclass on Leadership exclusively to Filter Free.

It’s been a year of ups and downs for the MC turned executive. Chocolate City expanded to accommodate smaller labels from Ice Prince and Jesse Jagz and the company has made progress in artiste development and maximizing revenue streams for artistes and producers signed to it. But on the flip side, there have been high profile exits from the fold and the label isn’t as dominant as it was a few years ago, leading many to question MI’s leadership. In the Masterclass, the rapper answers those questions – including allegations that his style of leadership stifles artistes on the label rather than giving them space to express their art.

According to M.I. –

With artistes, there’s a time when democracy stops and a decision has to be made

But at the same time, MI recognizes the need for flexibility –

You have to be an amoeba and adopt different shapes at different times

MI’s Masterclass on Leadership will be released in its entirety on Thursday, 30th June, 2016. You can watch a snippet above.
